The Lecale Way

This route through some of the most beautiful scenery uses a combination of country roads, tracks and footpaths.

The Lecale Way is a long-distance walking route. 49 miles in length it starts in Downpatrick, travels to
Strangford village and then down the Lecale Coast, taking in views of Strangford Lough via Ballyhornan, Ardglass, Killough and Dundrum before ending in Newcastle. Tower houses, castles and ancient monuments are dotted throughout the route and a wealth of wildlife can be discovered as you journey along through Lecale . Some sections of the route are on road. An entrance fee to Castle Ward applies (National Trust Property).

In Spring 2023 Newry Mourne and Down District Council have commissioned Outdoor Recreation NI to prepare a costed programme of upgrade repair and maintenance of the Lecale Way on their behalf.
