The Strangford Lough and Lecale area is internationally renowned for its abundance and diversity of habitats and species, with over 2000 marine animals and plants recorded. The calm shallow waters of the coast support internationally important numbers of waterfowl and waders each winter, most notably the majority of the
global population of light-bellied Brent geese. Many birds migrate here to escape harsh winters further north, though some such as terns, arrive in summer from the southern hemisphere, to nest and breed here. Rugged exposed coasts display an abundance of spring and summer coastal flowers.
