Views of Gullion Art Exhibition

A new display of landscape paintings from local artist Conor Ó Daighre, depicting Ireland’s mystery mountain, Slieve Gullion, as it is seen from the surrounding townlands of South Armagh and Dundalk has just opened in the 3rd Place Cafe, in Market Square Dundalk. The exhibition runs until 8th June and is open from 8.30 am – 8 pm Monday to Friday and from 9 am – 5 pm on Saturday.

Along with the Cooley Mountains, Slieve Gullion, the highest mountain in Co Armagh, dominates Dundalk’s skyline. At the heart of the unique geological formation and designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty called the Ring of Gullion, the eroded remains of a Paleocene volcano rises above the ancient rolling hills, steeped in ancient Irish mythology including the sagas of Fionn Mac Cumhaill and Cú Chulainn. The exhibition tells these stories and many more seen through the eyes of a true artist.

“Depending on the weather, time of day and place you’re standing, the mountain changes appearance dramatically and makes a fascinating subject for landscape oil painting,” said Conor whose detailed, almost luminous paintings show the changes in light and the wonderful skies that frame the mountain and landscape so dramatically.
