My Place: memories from 1921 to 2021
In 2021 Newry, Mourne and Down secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund through the Shared History programme to deliver a project entitled ‘My Place: memories from 1921 to 2021’.
Based in the three AONBs (Mournes, Ring of Gullion, and Strangford & Lecale) in Newry Mourne and Down and Ards and North Down Council areas, this project is based on an intergenerational oral social history, capturing and presenting it; facilitated by schools, Museums, senior’s groups, and local families.
It will take people on a journey of discovery or rediscovery of their home reflecting on the shared social history of the past 100 years, through the use of oral history and archive material. A focused look through the anchor of our placenames will draw upon the diverse perspectives of both the dominant religious, political and historically different communities with a shared history of placenames.
The project will work with AONB management across the Ring of Gullion, Mourne and Strangford and Lecale AONBs, North Down Museum and Down County Museum, and staff of the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork from Queens University. Facilitators from MayWe are assisting in the project and would like to contact community groups and historical societies who would be interested in participating.
If your group is interested, please contact Louise Conaghan from MayWe at projects@maywe.co.uk
