Citizen Science – Making your Wildlife count

“What’s about in the Wild” is the name of a programme of events and training that has been offered this autumn and winter by the Ring of Gullion Landscape Partnership Scheme, part funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Department of Social Development Areas at Risk programme.

The last event in the programme, will be “Citizen Science – Making your wildlife count” from 7.30pm-9.30pm on Tuesday 1^st December at the community centre in Crossmaglen.

Over the past 3 months participants in our series of events have learned to forage for wildfood, to identify fungi, hunt for tracks and trails, feed the birds in their gardens and identify trees during winter and this last event will bring together all the wildlife encounters and teach people how to record the wildlife that they have seen. It is not necessary to have attended any of the other training to learn how to record your wildlife using the simple, intuitive on-line system developed by CEDaR (centre for environmental data and records). By recording what you see, no matter how common, you are contributing to conserving the species that share our beautiful countryside

As an added incentive everyone who joins in this evening and brings an observation record of wildlife to put on the system, whether that be a record of a housemouse or a glimpse of a buzzard soaring during the summer, will be able to tuck into tasty Christmas cookies and non-alcoholic fruit punch as a thank you.
