Heart of Down Red Squirrel Group

AONB & Geopark Community Ambassadors

The Heart of Down Red Squirrel Group brought something very special to the 2025–2026 AONB & Geopark Ambassadors Programme – an already well-established and passionate team of volunteers, united by their love of nature and their commitment to protecting red squirrels and other wildlife across their local area.

Building on the fantastic conservation work they already carry out, the Ambassador Programme gave the group an opportunity to think about how they could share their knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Alongside the wider learning journey, training and connections with other Ambassador groups, their project focused on developing the skills and confidence needed to tell the story of their work and help more people understand the fascinating ecology of red squirrels.

A key part of this was two-day Walk Leader Training, completed by nine members of the group. This has equipped volunteers with the skills to plan and lead guided walks through the woodlands where they work, opening up exciting opportunities to introduce local people and visitors to red squirrel conservation, woodland ecology and the practical work that goes on behind the scenes to support this iconic native species.

The programme also provided practical support for the group’s ongoing conservation work. First aid kits were supplied for each of their sites, helping volunteers continue their activities safely, while additional squirrel feed was purchased to support their established supplementary feeding programme – including a good supply of the squirrels’ favourite nuts!

Just as importantly, taking part in the Ambassador Programme gave the group opportunities to step beyond their own woodlands, meet other volunteers and community groups, exchange knowledge and learn about conservation projects taking place across the AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark. In return, the Heart of Down Red Squirrel Group brought a wealth of their own experience to the network, sharing the dedication and practical knowledge they have developed through years of hands-on wildlife conservation.

The project is about more than supporting the group’s work today. By giving volunteers the skills to lead walks, engage with new audiences and share their knowledge, the group is now better equipped to inspire others to care about red squirrels, woodlands and the wider natural environment.

Their enthusiasm, experience and commitment are a fantastic addition to the Ambassador network, and we look forward to seeing where their new skills take them – and perhaps joining them for a red squirrel walk in the woods in the future! To keep up to date with the group head to Facebook
